What is CBD and How it Works

Unsurprisingly, we get this question all the time! As CBD begins to get its mainstream debut and become recognized as a household product, we figured we would help shed some light on it for those of you who have been curious about what CBD is and how it works!

WHAT IS CBD?

CBD is one of the many types of compounds, known as cannabinoids, that is derived from the cannabis plant. Until recently the cannabis plant was most commonly known for the “mind-altering” high that you would get from the THC compound. CBD is different because it is non-psychoactive, which means it does not give you the “high” effect. CBD can be derived from both types of cannabis plants; the marijuana plant or the hemp plant. CBD from both of these plants have the same chemical make up and the same effects and benefits. One major difference is that the hemp plant itself tends to have less than 0.3% of THC, whereas the marijuana plant has much higher levels of THC present. To ensure the lowest amount of THC present, we at Pot & Pan Kitchen make all of our artisan products from hemp derived CBD.

HOW DOES CBD WORK AND WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS?

Recent studies of the cannabis plant and its effects on the human body and mind have led to the discovery of the endocannabinoid system, an internal system of the human body. The endocannabinoid system acts like a biological communication system, that plays a role in our physiology, moods, and daily experiences. In 1988 scientists had discovered the first cannabinoid receptor, and by 1993 they had discovered a second. By 1995 they had classified these two receptors as CB1 and CB2. The CB1 receptors are mostly found in regions of the brain that are responsible for mental and physiological processes, whereas CB2 receptors are found throughout the central nervous and immune systems. CBD can bind directly to the CB2 receptors in our bodies, but does not bind directly with the CB1 receptors, much like THC does. CBD can actually act as a deterrent for the bond between the THC cannabinoid and the CB1 receptors, essentially neutralizing the “high” that you could feel from the THC. When someone ingests CBD, it can help create an internal homeostasis or rather a balance within. Research has shown that CBD has many health benefits including anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidants effects, anti-tumoral effects, anti-spasmodic effects, anti-anxiety effects, and much more. And, because of the health benefits that CBD can provide people, many of our customers will use our Pot and Pan Kitchen Artisan Hemp CBD products to help with their anxiety, stress, and pain relief.
